چکیده

MR imaging, primarily the spin-echo technique, is increasingly important in evaluating spinal disease [1-3]. We have found, however, that short TI inversion recovery (STIR) in conjunction with spin-echo techniques provides higher tissue contrast images in shorter imaging times while minimizing imaging degradation due to motion and pulsation. The STIR sequence suppresses the signal from fat [4], allowing clear separation of tumor or infection from normal structures in the spine and abdomen. When used in conjunction with T1weighted spin-echo imaging, the examination provides high sensitivity (from STIR) with excellent anatomic detail (from the T1-weighted spin-echo images). We describe the application of this approach to a case of spinal osteomyelitis with epidural abscess.

The STIR sequence in MR imaging.

A recent paper on MR imaging of infectious spondylitis [1) elaborated on and substantiated a previous report [2) of STIR in the evaluation of spinal infection. However, it also contained an important error in pulse sequence nomenclature: STIR was described as "short T1 inversion recovery. " The STIR sequence was described and named by Drs. Bydder, Young, and Steiner [3 , 4) as "short Tl inversi...

Gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging of spinal neoplasms: preliminary investigation and comparison with unenhanced spin-echo and STIR sequences.

Unenhanced T1- and T2-weighted spin-echo, short inversion time inversion recovery (STIR), and gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA)-enhanced spin-echo and STIR imaging techniques were used in 20 patients as part of a multicenter study to assess the safety and efficacy of Gd-DTPA in spinal imaging. Five patients had normal MR scans. Of those with lesions, both Gd-DTPA-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo and unen...

Optimization of inversion time for postmortem short-tau inversion recovery (STIR) MR imaging.

PURPOSE Signal intensity and image contrast differ between postmortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) images and images acquired from the living body. We sought to achieve sufficient fat suppression with short-tau inversion recovery (STIR) PMMR imaging by optimizing inversion time (TI). MATERIAL AND METHODS We subjected 37 deceased adult patients to PMMR imaging at 1.5 tesla 8 to 60 hours after con...

Panspinal Epidural Abscess

A 41-year-old man with recent intravenous drug use presented with 2 weeks of progressively worsening neck and low back pain, four days of bilateral upper and lower extremity weakness, and urinary retention. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a T2/STIR hyperintense posterior epidural collection, suggestive of a spinal epidural abscess (SEA), extending throughout the epidural space of the ...

Acute purulent discitis with epidural abscess of the cervical spine in an adult--case report.

A 52-year-old male presented with acute purulent discitis and epidural abscess of the cervical spine manifesting as neck pain and slight fever, followed by sudden onset of quadriparesis. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a low-signal-intensity area in the C6/7 disc space and epidural space ventral to the spinal cord with peripheral enhancement. Surgical exploration using an anterior approa...
